California may tax weed to save economy

I find it quite interesting that California has decided to leak this out because California has been making billions alone on medical marijuana, so if California decided to tax marijuana and legalize it they would make more then tobacco companies. I find it quite interesting that the Obama administration would not allow for the legalization of Marijuana to go into affect, but its good that California has already in the process and has declared their Sovereignty(becoming an independent nation)making it easy if they wanted to separate from the USA. anyways California has made a good idea, I mean I feel that it is a whole hell of a lot better then cigarettes millions of times over. in the article Calvina fay has said that our society needs to be saved from drugs, but if that is the case and correct me if I am wrong, but isn't our pharmaceutical overall a Fraud anyways and drinking alcohol is legal and smoking cigarettes are legal despite rising numbers of DUI's, lung cancer, and many other diseases that arise from what our government considers legal. I mean yes Marijuana in heavy doses could spark a lazy society maybe, but if it was legal at least people could have the option to buy marijuana if they wanted to right? yes, if cig are way worse and alcohol is, I really just don't understand why the government would not give people at least a chance to decide

  1. I too found it really interesting that California plans the legalization direction. It honestly makes sense though that it has been a decided direction the moment that California is officially bankrupt. The state is flat broke and now, regardless of all of the arguments over and over, now it comes down to the real bottom line......money. Money is the ultimate deciding factor. Interesting isn't it? Interesting that at the end of the day it isn't about anything other than the fact that the state needs money.

  2. I Think California could make a lot of money with the legalization of marijuana and treating it like alcohol (illegal to purchase if under 21). but what were you talking about with california taking interest in becoming a sovereign nation? i'm not quite sure what you mean because i'm pretty sure were not thinking of leaving the US.

  3. hmm i love this debate..however there are several reasons why is isnt legal yet...
    1. marijuana is too easy to grow and sell. Therefore taxing it would be useless because if it was legal everyone would just grow, sell and smoke their own, thus rendering tax useless.
    2. The hemp industry severely threatens the cotton industry.(did you know the declaration of independence was actually written on hemp paper?) In fact, that is why it is illegal in the first place. Rich cotton plantation owners in the south put pressure on the Government to make it illegal for this reason.

Basically, it isnt so much the effect of marijuana as it is the political and social effects that legalizing marijuana would have. Plus, people who have never smoked weed think that it is some crazy bad drug and these people are highly against it, in part because of the bullshit campaigns against it. On a last note.. I donno about California becoming its own country...we have enough problems just as a state and i dont know if we could support ourselves as a country.

  4. I do have a bit of a personal fear if this was to be legalized, however there are plenty of Prescription drugs that are along the same lines if not stronger that are given out all the time. I know people who use weed and are responsible, and if people could guarantee the same kind of responsibility if it were to be legalized and easily obtainable, then I think it could have the potential to work out and support the economy.

  5. I doubt it happens: in doing so Ca would be publicly condoning the use of drugs: specifically marijuana. I don't think their is enough support at a federal level that would encourage Ca to pursue such a tax. Ideally
Ca economy could stand to potentially gain a lot of money but I don't feel it is realistic or in our near-future

  6. California should just legalize weed considering that everyone in this state smokes it illegally anyways. I view weed as alcohol, people get drunk and people get high, no difference. I personally do not smoke or need weed but it would save a lot of trouble trying to keep weed illegal.

  7. Am for legalizing marijuana even if i do not smoke it. people are still growing it, selling it and are even obtaining the cards for it and from what i heard the cards are not hard to get. i dont see a problem with it, it will probably save our economy.

  8. I agree herb should be legalized like alcohol, having a legal age limit of 21, maybe even 18. As much as we would like it to become legalized, I dont see it happening. Nobody wants to be known as the guy that legalized weed. besides me
